A Wooded Garden

About the design

The existing garden was derelict following extensive building work carried out on the house. The irregular shape of the plot, together with a steep slope along the rear boundary and a large number of trees (with preservation orders on them) made it a difficult space to work with. The client wanted a smart, contemporary garden which would enhance the extended and remodelled house as well as providing outdoor living space and somewhere for the children to play.

Decking was used to create an outdoor living space leading out from the sitting room and up to a raised dining area beneath the trees. A play area with wooden play equipment was located within view of the house, with access onto the new lawn for the children to run around and play. A new wooden retaining wall was constructed along the rear bank to make a large bed in which to plant shrubs for screening, together with perennials for summer interest. Bark paths lead through the trees, between areas of springtime planting, to a swing seat in the sunniest corner of the garden.
